Medellín — Tourist Information

Medellín is a vibrant, innovative and contrasting city. Renowned worldwide for its urban transformation, it offers a rich cultural, gastronomic and natural experience for LatinR 2026 visitors.

What to visit?

El Poblado and Ciudad del Río

El Poblado neighbourhood is the main tourist hub of Medellín. With restaurants, bars, cafés and hotels at every price range, it’s a meeting point for locals and visitors alike. Ciudad del Río is home to the Medellín Museum of Modern Art (MAMM).

Medellín Botanical Garden

The Joaquín Antonio Uribe Botanical Garden is a green space of over 14 hectares in the heart of the city, with more than 600 plant species. It features the famous Orquideorama, an iconic architectural structure housing an orchid collection.

Parque Arví

Parque Arví is a nature reserve covering more than 1,700 hectares in the mountains surrounding Medellín. It is reached via the Metrocable (Line L from Acevedo station), making the journey itself a unique experience with panoramic views of the city.

Historic Centre and Plaza Botero

In the heart of Medellín you will find Plaza Botero, displaying 23 sculptures donated by famous local artist Fernando Botero. Nearby is the Museo de Antioquia, with an extensive collection of works by the same artist.

Guatapé and El Peñol

Approximately 2 hours from Medellín, the town of Guatapé and the El Peñol Rock (Rock of Guatapé) are among the most visited destinations in Colombia. The 220-metre-high rock offers spectacular views over the reservoir and surrounding islands.

Santa Fe de Antioquia

A picturesque colonial town 78 km from Medellín, declared a National Monument. Its cobblestone streets, colonial churches and the Puente de Occidente (one of the first suspension bridges in the Americas) make it a must-see destination.

Food and drink

Medellín is the epicentre of paisa cuisine, one of the most celebrated in Colombia:

  • 🍛 Bandeja paisa — The most representative dish of the region: beans, chicharrón, ground beef, rice, fried egg, chorizo, arepa and avocado.
  • 🫓 Arepas — Ubiquitous at breakfast and as a side dish at every meal.
  • ☕ Colombian coffee — Medellín is in the heart of the coffee-growing region. Take the opportunity to enjoy a genuine single-origin coffee.
  • 🥤 Natural fruit juices — The variety of Colombian tropical fruits is unmatched: passion fruit, lulo, soursop, sapote and more.

Accommodation

Medellín offers a wide range of accommodation options:

  • El Poblado — The most touristy area, with boutique hotels, hostels and apartments. Lively nightlife and restaurants within walking distance.
  • Laureles / Estadio — Quieter than El Poblado, with good Metro connections and close to the conference venues.
  • Envigado — Neighbouring municipality integrated into the city, with more affordable options and a local atmosphere.
